Yorkshire Wildlife Through The Lens. Natural History Presentation by Paul Miguel from Leeds. (November 17th2011)
We had an excellent presentation by Paul Miguel last week on Yorkshire Wildlife. It was very encouraging to see the wonderful images that were made in our own region, making us realise what interesting and diverse wildlife is accessible close to home. Paul was happy to explain many of his techniques and suggest areas to visit. Although it was his first visit to the club it was a relaxed and friendly presentation. I'm sure a few of us will be looking at the courses he runs to get some more advice. See www.naturephotographycourses.co.uk for more information. Thanks for a super evening, Paul.

Inter - Club Print Championship
Deeside College, Connah's Quay, Flintshire, 22ndOctober 2011.
Judges: Tom Dodd DPAGB. FRPS.
Irene Froy MPAGB. Hon PAGB. EFIAP. Anne Sutcliffe FRPS.
This year, Selby CC along with Ilkley CC, was chosen to represent the YPU in this prestigious competition.
The competition, between thirty six clubs, consists of two rounds, with each print being judged & awarded points to a maximum of 15.
Round 1. Each club enters 12 prints, a minimum of 5 Mono, 5 Colour and no more than 3 Natural History, at the end of which the top 8 clubs ( and ties ) go forward to the final with remaining clubs going into the Plate Competition.
Plate Competition.Only 5 prints per club are judged in the Plate Competition and there must be at least 2 prints not seen in Round 1, with the final selection being at least 2 Mono, 2 Colour and no more than 1 Natural History.
Final. The clubs contesting the final enter 15 prints each and may change any from the first round but still have a minimum of 5 Mono, 5 Colour and no more than 3 Natural History.
After Round 1, having scored 131 points ( Ilkley 132 ) we were into the Plate Competition and it was time to change some of the prints but none of those club members there on the day had been able to pick out any trends in the judging, so we decided to leave our 2 highest scoring prints from Round 1 and put in 3 new prints.
Next up the Plate Competition, and like us a lot of clubs had made some changes during the lunch break hoping to improve their scores. The judging in this section appeared to be a lot closer with average marks around 12 points. At the end of the competition both Selby & Ilkley had a very creditable 57 points with the joint winners scoring 61 points
The day finished with a very close fought final between the 9 clubs taking part with the end result being a tie between Edingburgh PS & Arden PG with 190 points.
It was an excellent day seeing some great prints, different ideas and perspectives and for learning what we need to do better when get another opportunity to take part.
Selby win the Settle Trophy. Monday, 24 October 2011.
The annual four club competition was hosted by Wakefield CC this year. The visiting clubs, Doncaster CC and Howden CC had a few supporters there and a 'magnificent 7' from Selby CC. The judge was Ken Furnage, who gave an interesting critique on many of the images. The prints were shown first and we crept into a two point lead. After a short break for refreshments and a raffle it was on to the projected images.
It seemed Ken preferred a traditional style, and an image that told a story, so straight natural history shots did not fare too well. He was dubious about some digital enhancements but where they were in keeping with the style of the image he found them acceptable. As always it was good to hear a considered commentary.
It was a close call through the round. We reached our last image, the penultimate of the evening, and horror, he didn't like it. So it was all down to the final image fromWakefield. He didn't like that either and the last two images scored the same mark. We finished overall 3 points in front having used images from 6 different authors. It's good to have the Trophy back.
